What you see as SweMaint today has its roots in a network of workshops that Swedish State Railways (SJ) established in the mid-19th century. Most of our current workshops have thus played a crucial role in the development of the rail industry and have had historical significance in each region across Sweden.
The era of deregulation and privatisation in the 1980s saw this network of workshops split in two – one in the north and one in the south. The southern part was transformed into a commercial enterprise known as ”SweMaint AB”.
SweMaint AB was eventually sold to ASEA (later known as ABB) only to be sold back to the government a couple years later.
As part of the deregulation process, SweMaint bought all replacement wheels from the government-owned rail transport company and established a successful "wheel pool" that is still a core part of its business. SweMaint’s wheel pool is based on a replacement system for wheelsets that cuts the capital required and ensures the supply of high-quality replacement wheels.
In the early 2000’s, SweMaint acquired its competitors, Chr Olsson AB and Gävle Godsvagnsservice AB, only to then be acquired by Malmö-based K Group AB in 2007. The company became an affiliate of Kockums Industrier, the leading manufacturer of unique freight wagons in northern Europe at the time, with a similar history in the rail industry to ours. SweMaint AB has been a wholly-owned Kockums Industrier company since 2000.
